4K and 5K iMacs (12222)

Mac Benchmarks - Geekbench Browser. Thanks for your reply Ronin, those benchmarks were quite helpful in my considerations. One thing that really surprised me was the performance of the imac when using a single core, it actually scored higher than the 6 core mac pro in that regard.

It was also surprisingly close when using multi-core. And seeing as how Ae is no longer taking advantage of multiprocessing, I don't know that I would get any use out of those extra cores.

So, I think the iMac is probably the best bet for my dollars, and I can translate the saved cash into a new laptop sooner than planned, so I get the best of both worlds. AE bit was always plagued with non multi-threading code, but they removed the work around multi-processing in order to move forward and fix AE. Error: You don't have JavaScript enabled.

This difference is much bigger than it sounds. Panel yields may be tight for a while, and external displays are a low priority for Apple.

The new iMacs push on iMac Pro territory, but how much power do you really need?

Pushing this many pixels requires more bandwidth than DisplayPort 1. I wrote about this a few times.

Doing it right will require waiting until DisplayPort 1. It may be possible to use two DisplayPort 1. Just like the theoretical Apple external 5K monitor, it will rely on tricks like MST to be treated as one big monitor, which may be unsupported or buggy on the Mac Pro. The midrange 6-core model, likely to remain the best bang-for-the-buck option, will likely use the Xeon E v3. The iMac will remain close or faster in single-threaded tasks, and the Mac Pro will beat the iMac at multi-threaded and OpenCL tasks, with the multi-threaded gap being larger if you get the much more expensive 8- or core Mac Pro.

The Mac Pro is ridiculously quiet.
